Podcast Hackathon

Introduction

In this mini-project we were put into groups of 3-4 and were assigned a character from the book ATDPTI (The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian) and make a podcast about them. My group was assigned Mary Spirit who is the main character's (Junior) older sister. This project was able to deepen my understanding of the book because with the podcasts, you had to really think deep about each character and what were their contributions to the book. Since we made podcasts, I learned that it's important to speak clearly so that whoever is listening is able to understand what you're saying. Also, I learned that it's important to have some background noise or at least some sound effects so that your podcast is enjoyable to the listener.

Brainstorm for Mary

As you can see, each group member's work is in a different color. My designated color was Red, so that means that each writing that it's Red is my work. The dialogue that I had wrote made it into our podcast. I don't think there's anything that I wish we would've included in our podcast. I think my group covered everything and did a good job on adding the events where Mary appeared.

Podcast Script

For our script, each member was assigned a specific scene. As you can see, I wrote scene 2 since my color is red and all of scene 2 is in red. When writing our script, my group wanted to make sure that no student was doing more work than another, so we made sure to split up the work evenly. We started working on our script from the very beginning so whatever we had planned we sticked with it. When writing my scene, I was stuck at some points but since I had the book as a reference, it helped me overcome that roadblock. When recording the different scenes, we would sometimes have many takes since we would start laughing while in the middle of recording. Other than that, we did a pretty good job at recording.

Scrum Board

Our squad used the scrum board in order to plan out what needed to get done so that we wouldn't fall behind. The scrum board was helpful because we were all able to see what work needed to get done. Also, I think that seeing other group's scrum board encouraged us to get our work done and not slack off.

Podcast (Final)

When we recorded our scenes, we recorded at multiple locations such as Vons, In-N-Out, and at the school. We recorded at different locations so there could be background noises to make our podcast sound interesting. I played Ms. Spirit who is Mary's mom. When it came to assigning characters, there wasn't much of a problem when each member said who they wanted to be. When we first started recording with the Yogi mic, we experimented with it and just said a bunch of random things to see what we sounded like. Also, when Alejandro was experimenting with Audacity, he changed the pitch of our voices and made them sound deep which was really funny.
