Participating in a student walkout was something really new to me. I’ve never participated in a walk out before, so walking out of class and towards the front of the high school seemed bizarre to me. When I say bizarre, I don’t mean it in a bad way. It was a new learning experience for me and I hope that I am able to participate in more walkouts. To be honest, I felt like the walkout wasn’t very well organized. As the clock hit 10:00, I walked to the front of the school thinking that it’d be quiet, but there was music playing.

The song playing was “Where Is The Love?” by The Black Eyed Peas. I know that the message of the song is to spread love rather than violence and hate, but I feel like playing music during an event like this was unnecessary. I wasn’t sure if we were supposed to be silent for those 17 minutes, but I felt like talking during the duration of that time was inappropriate. Also, I think for almost half of the 17 minutes, students were just outside talking. It may seem as if I’m bashing the walkout, but that’s not the case. I just think that it could have been more thought out and well planned. I do hope that my school has more walkouts and that we are able to recognize these types of issues. Overall, I’m glad to be a part of a school that encourages others to take action and stand up for what they believe in.
