Participating in a student walkout was something really new to me. I’ve never participated in a walk out before, so walking out of class and towards the front of the high school seemed bizarre to me. When I say bizarre, I don’t mean it in a bad way. It was a new learning experience for me and I hope that I am able to participate in more walkouts. To be honest, I felt like the walkout wasn’t very well organized. As the clock hit 10:00, I walked to the front of the school thinking that it’d be quiet, but there was music playing.

SAT: Stressful and tedious (Test)

Taking the SAT for the first time was stressful to say the least. To be honest, I think I could’ve done a better job of preparing myself. I did practice tests for both the math and writing/reading section. But I never took a practice SAT fully. Taking the practice tests really helped me be aware of what was on the test and also learn how to apply the strategies that I learned. Since I joined humanities honors, I was required to buy a Reading and Writing Workout book for the SAT. In that book, there was different strategies that I could use during the grammar portion of the SAT. There was also several practice tests inside the book too which I found helpful because I was able to test out the strategies. For math, we’ve been doing SAT Warm-ups ever since the beginning of the year. We were always given two minutes to solve the problem to show us what two minutes really feel like since the SAT is timed and they didn’t want us to ever leave a problem unanswered. The day before the SAT was good I’d say. I remember my teachers giving our class a last minute pep talk so that we felt relaxed and not as nervous.

Going to Dr. Sasha Kauffman’s lab at UCSD was really interesting. When I think of a lab, my first thought is a building where it looks boring and people are doing their own thing and not working together. That was not the case when I walked into the lab. When I walked into the lab, the environment felt really nice. The people in the lab were all very friendly and they were also really funny. I thought I was going to be intimidated by the people leading the different research techniques because they were all experienced and I felt like I was going to do something wrong. What really surprised me was how much I enjoyed the lab visit.
