My zine group had topics that were all very similar with one another. Our group addressed the issues that is happening between males and females. I think my group did an okay job on promoting advocacy on my topic. Like I said, there were people in my group who had almost the same social topic as me so we were all practically advocating for the same topic. My topic of choice was body image and how it affects adolescents as well as what causes them to have negative body image. I chose this topic because it is something that I have struggled with for almost my entire life and I hope to help other people realize that a label does not define them. For my persuasive essay, I chose to focus on special parts of body image that I could personally relate to.
Literature research helped me become more aware of the way people are influenced by other people. As I was reading different articles about body image, I was able to learn more about how it can start at a young age. Interviewing my social advocate helped me get a better understanding of what I can do to help others have a positive body image rather than a negative one. Something my social advocate said that really stood out to me was, “Think critically of how we can change structure system”. I think this quote really made me realize that there is change that needs to happen.
I’m proud of producing my group’s zine. I have to admit, our zine wasn’t the best, but I am proud of all my effort I had put into creating it. All the times I would stay after school, before school, and even stay up late at night working on it had payed off. I was the main one in our group that worked on the zine because only one person could really work on it on a computer. From designing a community event, I learned that there is always going to be someone who is doing more work than others. I will keep this in mind when going into future projects because if I see myself or others not putting in much effort, I will remind them of what they are supposed to be doing or ask their other peers if there is anything that they can help with.
